Before I get started, the boys over at Channel Z have their Dragon*Con video podcast (I still don’t know what the difference between “online video” and “video podcast” is), which includes GGP's very own resident jerk; me. Check their Sept 20th 2009 update (or be lazy and click this word: Fig Apples) if you want to see me shamelessly promote this website and attempt to choke myself with a PS2 controller (or was it the NES controller?) after a few pages of horrible anime fanfiction. You’ll probably want to see that later on, if you don’t already.
About a week ago, GGP staffer Chris Deguzman thought it'd be cute to do a small write-up on his experiences with an Xbox 360 he managed to snag. Not only did I give it the "go ahead", but I had asked him to post it here after posting the same rant almost verbatim elsewhere. Honestly, I've only heard one complaint, and it was from someone who also owned both a PlayStation 3 and 360 who preferred Microsoft’s console. And I won't deny that I've been critical of Microsoft and some of their business practices. I asked Chris to have the piece here (again, it was an opinion piece), not because I agreed with it, but because of where he was coming from. Before, this was a guy that wasn't playing favorites, and didn't have a strong opinion of the 360. It wasn't until he got a deal on one that he was absolutely flabbergasted with the lack of quality of the system. He was more brutal than I could ever bring myself to be.
Editor's Note: The opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the entirety of Guttergamers’ Paradise, ApolloMatrix, or BlueHell Media. (But damn it, the editor happens to personally agree with this one, so it's staying up.)
I finally bit the bullet and bought a 360 (My gamertag is taitaisanchez, not that I'll be on XBL Gold after the first free month or so). At $199 for a 20 gig refurb, it felt like a steal. Click past the jump to get my impressions of it.
Time to rejoice, my fellow TurboGrafx junkies! TG-16’s prehistoric mascot, Bonk, will be returning in a new adventure on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and WiiWare. Entitled Bonk: Brink of Extinction, the new addition is expected to be more or less a 2.5D take on the series, which is not at all a bad thing as the Bonk games were known for some seriously addicting side-scrolling action that easily rivaled Sonic and Mario back in the day. Too bad no one paid attention. Brink of Extinction is expected to be released sometime between late 2009 and Spring 2010.
Hudson has also announced that the follow up to the 360’s Bomberman entry, Bomberman Live: Battlefest, will also be released on all three major consoles. Wait, ALL THREE? PS3 has Bomberman Ultra, and the Wii got Bomberman Blast, so we’re sticking with one name this time? From what’s known about the new game, the only new features being brought up are new maps, new gameplay modes, and support for playable XBLA Avatars (no word on Mii’s for the Wii version). Why not just release a DLC upgrade to the original games? All I know is that I’m not paying another $10 for Bomberman again, unless I can ride those kangaroo things and the non-Microsoft consoles get equal treatment.

It’s like the industry is looking for an excuse to kick this past (and somewhat late) Weekend GGP Report in the face! As I mentioned VERY EARLY yesterday morning, Sega has a poll letting fans vote on what Sega Genesis (that’s MegaDrive to my PAL nation guttergamers and import snobs) title to bring to Xbox Live Arcade, as this "thing" to celebrate the 20th Aniversary of the self-proclaimed “leader of the 16-bit revolution”. The poll includes Golden Axe II, Shining Force, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Toejam & Earl, WonderBoy In Monster World, and… up until now… Earthworm Jim. Now the first four of these games are already available on Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, and latter three are available on Wii Virtual Console (If you're wondering "what about the SNES version?", my buddy DJRanmaS pointed out to me that the Gen/MD version has an additional level that was left out of the SNES version.)
Well, guess what guys? Interplay and Gameloft just announced that they’re working on an Earthworm Jim for Xbox Live, WiiWare, PlayStation Network and mobile phone platforms.
Thought $20.00 was too much for ten extra hours of Grand Theft Auto 4? I wouldn't know, I never finished the main game, I got tired of Brucie calling me to go to a titty bar with him while I was trying to stalk some guy. Regardless, Xbox Live is holding the 360-exclusive DLC chapter, The Lost And Damned, at $15.00 (1,200 Microsoft Points, why can't these guys go on a points system where the smallest increment is higher than one American cent?) Weither or not this is to get those of us prepped for the next DLC chapter in the GTA4 saga, The Ballad Of Gay Tony (slated for October) remains to be seen, but if you're one of those that has a hankering for Liberty City, this would be the route to go. My guess is, most of those that still do 1. already got it or 2. are waiting on the physical disk collection of both DLC chapters, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes From Liberty City to come out (slated at about $40.00, but just like every other GTA, That Large Video Game Retail Chain Whose Name Ends In "Stop" will probably be carrying used copies at $30-$35 before Christmas.
After hearing it from Kotaku, I went to verify it for myself with the source they listed as well as my local GameStop, and it seems to be true. GameStop is selling new copies Street Fighter IV for 360 and PS3 at about $20.00 each. This is about $15 less than what I've seen used copies go for, so yes, this is a hell of a deal if you don't already own the game. The recently released PC version still goes for about $40.00, but hey, at least you can mod that version to have Mr. T fight Nude Cammy or whatever... nah still not worth it. No clue as to how long this sale is going on, so I'd pick up a cheap copy for your console of choice ASAP. UPDATE: Joystiq reports this sale ends August 2nd. Cheapassgamer has provided a list of other (less successful) titles at the same price.
Fans of Newgrounds.com are no stranger to flash developers-turned-console game developer The Behemoth, known for Alien Hominid (a title we at GGP are sure to look back on at some point) and Xbox Live Arcade smash hit Castle Crashers. Well it looks like PlayStation 3 owners will get their shot at Castle Crashers, a side-scrolling hack n' slash inspired the likes of the Sega Saturn cult classic Guardian Heroes, as they recently showed off their work in progress at Comic-Con. No word as of yet regarding a release date or pricing of the PS3 version, or if the port will see new features, but seeing as to how the 360 version was released at around $15.00 US (or 1200 Microsoft Points, if you actually think video game consoles should use their own currency), PS3 owners are sure to have an inexpensive, addictive game to fill the void of a good Golden Axe game or sequel to Capcom's Knights Of The Round.
A guttergamer is the kind of video game enthusiast that normally has at least three different consoles hooked to his TV at once; at least two of them are obsolete.
A guttergamer will spend hours digging through the bargain bin of his local video game specialty outlet looking for that one inexpensive game that was painfully overlooked by critics, or just laughably bad. Even giving a bad game the roasting treatment with friends is entertainment.
A guttergamer doesn't really care how s/he plays that old 16-bit era game; be it a cheap anthology disc, a plug and play system, or on the original console. As long as it's fun, the medium matters little.
A guttergamer buys games for fun, not for collector's value. So what if only 1,500 copies of Cheetamen 2 for NES exist? It's still not worth $200 to own one of the worst games ever made!
A guttergamer will normally not care about having an instruction manual or case for the game (unless it's for personal sentimental value); they're crafty enough to not need them.
